The posting below looks at common teaching mistakes we need to avoid, it
is by Richard M. Felder, North
Carolina State University and Rebecca Brent, Education Designs, Inc. See also Felder's: RESOURCES IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING EDUCATION at: http://www4.ncsu.edu/unity/lockers/users/jc/felder/public/
Like most faculty members, we began our academic careers with zero prior instruction on college teaching and quickly made almost every possible blunder. We've also been peer reviewers and mentors to colleagues, and that experience on top of our own early stumbling has given us a good sense of the most common mistakes college teachers make. In this column and one to follow we present our top ten list, in roughly increasing order of badness. Doing some of the things on the list may occasionally be justified, so we're not telling you to avoid all of them at all costs. We are suggesting that you avoid making a habit of any of them.
Mistake #10. When you ask a question in class,
immediately call for volunteers.
You know what happens when you do that. Most of the students avoid eye
contact, and either you get a response
from one of the two or three who always volunteer or you answer your own question. Few students even bother to think about
the question, since they know that eventually
someone else will provide the answer.
We have a suggestion for a better way to handle questioning, but it's
the same one we'll have for Mistake #9 so let's hold off on it for a moment.
Mistake #9. Call on students cold.
You stop in mid-lecture and point your finger abruptly: "Joe,
what's the next step?" Some students are
comfortable under that kind of pressure, but many could have trouble thinking of their own name. If you frequently
call on students without giving them time to think
("cold-calling"), the ones who are intimidated by it won't be following your lecture as much as praying that you
don't land on them. Even worse, as soon as you call on someone, the others
breathe a sigh of relief and stop thinking.
A better approach to questioning in class is active learning. Ask the
question and give the students a short time
to come up with an answer, working either individually or in small groups. Stop them when the time is up and call
on a few to report what they came up with.
Then, if you haven't gotten the complete response you're looking for, call for volunteers. The students will have time to
think about the question, and-unlike what happens
when you always jump directly to volunteers (Mistake #10)-most will try to come
up with a response because they don't want to look bad if you call on them. With active learning you'll also avoid the
intimidation of cold-calling (Mistake #9) and
you'll get more and better answers to your questions. Most importantly, real
learning will take place in class, something that doesn't happen much in traditional lectures.
Mistake #8. Turn classes into PowerPoint
shows.
It has become common for instructors to put their lecture notes into
PowerPoint and to spend their class time
mainly droning through the slides. Classes like that are generally a waste of
time for everyone. If the students don't have paper copies of the slides,
there's no way they can keep up. If they have the copies, they can read the slides faster than the instructor can lecture through
them, the classes are exercises in boredom, the
students have little incentive to show up, and many don't.
Turning classes into extended slide shows is a specific example of:
Mistake #7. Fail to provide variety in instruction.
Nonstop lecturing produces very little learning, but if good instructors
never lectured they could not motivate students by
occasionally sharing their experience and wisdom.
Pure PowerPoint shows are ineffective, but so are lectures with no visual content-schematics, diagrams, animations, photos, video clips,
etc.-for which PowerPoint is ideal. Individual
student assignments alone would not teach students the critical skills of
teamwork, leadership, and conflict management they will need to succeed as professionals, but team assignments
alone would not promote the equally important
trait of independent learning. Effective instruction mixes things up: boardwork, multimedia, storytelling, discussion,
activities, individual assignments, and group work (being careful to avoid
Mistake #6). The more variety you build in, the
more effective the class is likely to be.
Mistake #6. Have students work in groups with no individual
accountability.
All students and instructors who have ever been involved with group work
know the potential downside. One or two students do
the work, the others coast along understanding little
of what their more responsible teammates did, everyone gets the same grade, resentments and conflicts build, and
the students learn nothing about
high-performance teamwork and how to achieve it.
The way to make group work is cooperative learning, an exhaustively researched instructional method that effectively
promotes development of both cognitive and
interpersonal skills. One of the defining features of this method is individual accountability-holding each team member accountable for the
entire project and not just the part that he or she may have focused on.
References on cooperative learning offer
suggestions for achieving individual accountability, including giving individual exams covering the full range of knowledge
and skills required to complete the project
and assigning individual grades based in part on how well the students met their responsibilities to their team.
I really liked this article. In my opinion, the author of this article tried to give real problem. For example, mistake #6 may prove real situation because even we are freshmen, we have noticed this kind of noticeable mistakes. Mistake #7 seems to be realistic, because I myself faced with that type of situation. As an example, I can say that in IELTE most of the time we work in groups, sometimes one or two member of that group work very hard, others just satisfied with their group mates’ works. At the end they will get the same points, therefore teachers should pay more attention to letting students work individually.
ReplyDeleteIn general, if we work on all this mistakes as future teachers, I hope we will not face with them.
As we can see above, assigning a student with the tasks of a more indivudual nature, is, in my opinion, not a very good step to take.. because, consequently, students may be left lacking the feeling what high-performance teamwork is. Instead, encouraging students to learn how to be of a more use in teamwork would be better.
DeleteThe thing what I wanted to write is clearly given by Saltanat. I am quite sure that most students are get bored with group works. Honestly saying sometimes I miss tasks which are done individually. Personally, I think that the main cause of it is lack of papers, lol:D
DeleteThe article is quite good. I also have an opinion that some teachers, no matter experienced or inexperienced, occasionally make such mistakes. From my point of view, by immediately calling for the volunteers teachers do not give the chance to answer shy and unconfident students, only the same active students participate in the lesson while being questioned. Other teachers mistakes like calling on students cold or having students work in groups without individual evaluation cause partially thinking and working students, one half of the group is working, and another is having a rest. Students are becoming lazy when teachers every time have PowerPoint shows. It is also ineffective way of teaching because students should have more natural lessons (lectures). All those mistakes will not be faults if teachers do all their activities properly as well as listen to students’ suggestions sometimes.
ReplyDeleteEven it hasn't yet been finished it provides lots of useful information. You have very good tips that has taken into account every side of teachers' working with students. I really agree on the idea that teachers should act in a way that students could develop both their teamwork skills and the skills to work independently. Teachers should make every individual in a team be responsible and important for the grade all the team members get equally. Only then, teachers can have all their students involved in the appointment and work collaboratively enough. Otherwise, only the active students who consider themselves to know more than passive students may work more without letting passive groupmates do something about that assignment.
ReplyDeleteYes, Iroda. I approve of your ideas about group work and individual work in classroom. As you mentioned, some passive students who are not weighted in the class activities and homework can get low marks, since not trying themselves and relying on their friends and other groupmates. Although it's so, some teachers found that groupwork can help students exchange their knowledge on a particular subject as it's beneficial for all of them.
DeleteThis article is quite good. The language of article is understandable and easy, that`s why maybe you can take main ideas easily. I think, article is based on some researches which made by writers. The structure is also fine bercause firstly writers gave the teachers` mistakes and then they gave the solution of the problem. After reading five mistakes, I really want to read about rest of mistakes which teachers make.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I have understood, we are welcome to think of other mistakes that teachers probably make. I couldn't come up with any.. if you have some ideas to share about teachers' mistakes, i will be glad to support and continue.
DeleteFotima, you are right that the structure of this article is good. Yet, I am not quite sure about its language. For instance, the first article's (How much is too much homework) language is better than this one. Am I right?:)
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteToshkenboy, I guess we don't have to assume other 5 mistakes yet, because there is no hint on the article page which could make us do it. So it's not yet time to do so.
DeleteA neatly organized article has really taken me aback, as it is on a sort of stimulating issue that is definitely going to trigger some challenging reaction by the students, really keen on commenting on such things. I would love to state my opinion in the other way progressive order of ten worst mistakes.
ReplyDeleteTo begin with, I would like to emphasize on the part of the article that says “mistake”. As it is teacher’s duty to make educated people out of the ones who were just able to think, or (uhmmm, not sure)… mistake #10 is one of the worst things that any teacher can ever make. Because, doing this mistake they do the worst thing that can ever be done to their students. The class they are teaching gets more and more uneducated by the above action of the teacher. Since, not all students are equal on some levels, majority students are left undiscovered under cover of the students who are enthusiastic and energetic. Moving next, I am not a researcher or professor, but I think ‘cold calls’ are sometimes helpful, after which students are more alert and ready for the class of the next time. But, in this respect, it seems to be the thing to worry about as a mistake of teachers. Next, power point presentations are very useful aids for the academic development of students, but in the case stated above, like “being OVERUSED”.. it doesn’t really sound like a good idea to approve of. Further, VARIETY! I think, it’s already clear even by the word itself. Variety brings about various outcomes, among which, hopefully, good ones are going to have the edge over any other possible less good outcome. Having thoroughly read the definition of mistake #6, I have come up with an interesting question, which I guess has bothered everyone who has hitherto read this article: Aren’t the contributors of the article - Richard M. Felder & Rebecca Brent the IELTE students currently studying with us?!!! Huh, certainly not, I hope! Because they acknowledged one of the serious problems, nowadays taking place in IELTE. Actually, at times I am also not an ‘exception’, as I am practically unable to work with my group mates when I am, unfortunately ((, detained by some more serious problems, relevant to my ‘the other’ academic life!
Given that I wasn’t really able to think of mistakes made by teachers, I believe, in the days to come, with the contribution of other IELTE students, we will be capable of handling this requirement, too. ;)
When I started reading this article, the title has captured my attention. It is something that worths speaking or expressing the opinion about. It’s truly one of the greatest mistakes to call on volunteers; it’s like being mean to passive students. Cold calls are also not very good things… but approving of Toshkenboy’s idea.. I saw one TV show ‘The Money Chase in Harvard Business School’. There, cold calls were one of the most unique and distinctive feature of one professor’s lectures. Because students didn’t know who was going to be questioned, and just in case, everyone tend to be completely ready for the class. Power point presentations are useful, whereas turning classes into the sequentially excessive power point presentations may not be of a great use for students. It somewhat falls under the variety part.. Avoiding the whole lecture of ‘ppt’s, teachers ensure the variety within the class during the lecture. For the last one, I can say, teachers should wisely approach this problem and should motivate passive students and make them participate efficiently in teamwork.
ReplyDeleteTo begin with I shuld state that the article itself is informative and to some extent seurvey based one. Why? Because, the writer tells about who thik what and who told what in little amounts.
ReplyDeleteWhat I've noticed is that it lacks organization and cohesion of ideas and even stucture is unclear.
Unitially, as I was reading the pictures of routine and students' life came to my mind. However, the issue is not only related to students. Afterwards, I began jumping on the different unlinked ideas, which did not let me catch the gist.
This probably is the symptom of lacking ability either of knowledge on particular theme or organizationary skills.
As I have a little experience of checking diffrent types of writings,I can tell that majority of people with such problems do not know much about what they write. Consequently they try to relay on thei back knowledge and go around it. As the writer did here.
Or they just cannot imagine the stucture of their writing, or let us say they do not know when to stop developing one idea.
Furthermore, to be honest I could not get the real answers to the pointed quetion in the title...
I think, it would have been better, if you had made a little bit different approach.
DeleteSorry!!! The word "seurvey" should be corrected to "survey" I unintentionally misppelled it!!!
ReplyDeleteAAA!! And also the word "thik" to "think" I am in a Great HURRY!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd also the word "Different" OOOOh GOoooosh
ReplyDeleteany of us might have such mistakes.. no need to worry)))
ReplyDeleteToshkentboy, you know , actually , my comment was about the FIRST TEXT.
DeleteHA HA HA I don't know how I typed it here...
gush that's why I should not have hurried...
PEOPLE, MS SEVARA plz accept my comment on MAY 20 to be for the FIST ARTICLE!!!
As only 5 ways, from 10 to 6, are suggested, I try to come up with some other possible suggestions.
ReplyDelete#5
Teachers should not punish students for mistakes occuring now and then. It is mistake that teaches us to avoid similar case next time. If a student fears making mistakes due to punishment, they live on marks not on knowledge.
#4
In ou current educational system, only academic perfomance is emphasized and stressed on. Social skills and financial knowledge are ignored. Academic pefomance is not the indicator of the potential for succes in life. Most successful bright graduates feel the desperate need for guidance after schoo0l life. It is high time fo teacher to stop encouaging students to solely focus on academic performance. this drastic mistake may affect a student lifelong.
#3 Sometimes a child perceives a subject better when a peer explains just because they feel no pressure. From time to time, smarter students should be granted an opportunity to teach relatively simple and unimportant topics under supevision of a teacher. This way could pay off dual bebefits, both for the smart and peers who are challenged to understand what teacher explains feeling pressure.

Good idea, Anvar!
DeleteLet me also give one more rule which I think that some teachers should pay their attention to it. The rule which I wanted to suggest is sometimes teachers influence students mood with their depression or bad mood. Of course, admittedly, it is the hardest thing to do. (Especially for me). Yet, teachers (we also future teachers) should work on these skills, CONTROLLING EMOTIONS and hiding mood. Otherwise, our emotions will control not only us but students too.
Anvar's predicts are very good.Additionally i can write teachers should find a way that makes a student to realize that he or she learns, gets because of their 'bright future',not for marks and bonuses. If teachers, as well as we(future teachers)find such kind of methods of teaching,in the future such kind of teaching mistakes will decrease
DeleteThank you Anvar for starting this kind of predicting teachers mistakes cause it`s great opportunity to say about it few words... If you don`t mind as Bahor I also wanted to add one suggestion - Teachers shouldn`t show their negative to the student`s at the first time meeting. Telling them that they`re always wrong and staying on the only their opinion will influence on students in not doing anything. Relationships between students and teachers are very important! We shouldn`t forget about phycological sides of the lesson. Lets pay attention not only for teaching methods.
DeleteIt is clear that information about teaching mistakes is based on life experience. And it is really good to give your resource for volunteers. I got useful information about topic. However, in my view calling volunteers is okay when a teacher asks a question during classes. Because at the time of receiving volunteers’ answer others think about the response which they want to give or say. Though, it happens when teacher gives the same question everyone, not different one to each of them. I have no chance to disclaim the other mistakes that you mentioned. But, there are some advantages if teachers use PPP in right way or in mid-level, let’s say. In short I would like to say that your advice for teachers is useful. They can utilize them,, so that to avoid failure in teaching.
ReplyDeleteTill now i only used to hear the mistakes of students or pupils. It was something new for me to read about TEACHER'S MISTAKES. In my opinion, experienced teachers rarely do such kind of mistakes. Why i am telling so??? Because they study pedogogy and know how to act with students. I agree that teacher shouldn't have to base on only Power Point presentations. By this way "lazy" teachers(even i wouldn't call them teachers)just make Classes boring and students wastetheir time. I think so, I do not know others...
ReplyDeleteThe thing that I want to add to Lily's opinions is young teachers often face with these problems because their teachers do not teach them how to solve such kind of problems for years.I am going to suggest teachers that let students work or present freely.Because of some rules their creativity also is limited.
DeleteWell, the author has raised a good problem about teaching methods. The examples about teacher's mistakes are well highlighted in this article. I think, teachers should gain a lot of teaching skills and methods besides Power Point slide shows, lectures that the author calls boring, sometimes experience sharing. If a teacher wants her/his students to diffuse a good and high-quality learning, s/he has to learn the most effective and the best teaching methods. The reason why i'm telling so is that students get involved in all lessons as the teachers do their best to teach them. I agree with the author's opinions about some students do not participate in the activities the teachers have found more interesting and effective. Why do not they participate in the activities??? The answer is they may be dealing with other state of affairs, for instance, their own business or attractive things that s/he or their friends have. In this case, in order to get all the students involved into lessons and activities, teachers should pay careful attention to them. About the assesment of all students who have worked on projects together, I think, they should be perfect as much as possible, because teachers are glad of students if they know all the materials which the teachers elucidated. The result is best as students have cottoned on the instructions and tasks. If you follow this comment, we will all have reached the main point of teachers teaching method and their assesments of students.
ReplyDeleteGood ieas,Marat! I quite agree with u that not all students like participating in activities. For examle, If the teacher gives them groupwork tasks, they rely on the student who are smart in their group. For this reason, If i were a teacher, i would use individual method,so that each student gets a grasp of the topic which i want them to understand.
DeletePerfect comment Marat ;)
DeleteYes, Marat, I agree wth all of your ideas. Teachers in whose classes students are busy with their own busness should not only pay attention to them, but also should try to find out how they can get those students to get involved in their classes. They should learn more about the strategies that are effective in making all the students think, get involved and interested.
DeleteOoh, I am sorry Marat, not all of them.
DeleteYou pointed out that assesments of students who worked on one project together should get perfect marks. It sounds as if some teachers put the marks for teamwork a bit unfairly. I have never seen such teachers, they always appreciate teamwork projects and put great marks equally. So, do you think that some teachers do so, or have you ever witnessed it?
Yes Iroda, you know that all students' levels and knowledge are not the same. Or they cannot get along with each other when they are given teamwork. As a result, they start altercating with one another as their opinions are not the same on the project. For example, one can say I do not understand this, and others also will not cotton on this information, that's why we don't need to be involved in the project so deeply because of their ideas and comments, they have to change their minds and this prompts to weakness on teamwork.
DeleteHaving read this post,I thought about your points which I liked much and about other mistakes of teachers which we can face nowadays.Yeahh,I agree with using PPP is a waste of time.In my point of view, it is effective when you gave it to the students by memory card.It is good method for recalling and checking ur comprehension skill.Looking from the other hand PPP is really useful for visual learners.Active learning is very useful for students 'cos they can express their opinion too.Making non-stop lecture is really boring and irritating. It would be great if u use in your non-stop lectures stories from your life experience in order to warm up the audience and to make them interested in lecture.<< of course, your stories must have a connection between your lecture. The most point I liked is, looking to interpersonal skills of the student.I really liked this post.
ReplyDeletefrom this article i think we can find out a lot of useful information for us. i also think that teacher should pay more attention on personality of each student, because some of student can not answer if lecturer suddenly asks him/her. i think the best way of teaching is activeness during the lesson.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThe article is very good and understandable. Language also easy. Firstly, I looked the title which has attracted my attention and I was really interested in, so I read with interest. While reading I came across some mistakes which teachers do? For example: Mistake #10 is calling volunteers when teacher asks question. Maybe it's somehow true, but in my point of view, it's a little bit wrong. However, there are some student's who are very shy or who don't do homework. Teacher shouldn't call volunteers in order to know all students' knowledge. In Mistake #6 is written about team and individual teaching. I think, teamwork is better than individual, because, individual lessons are so boring. In teamwork students improve their speaking and make new friends. Actually, some people like teamwork, some people adore teaching individual. They choose according to their personality. As we, IELTE students are future teachers we should know this all mistakes. While reading I really enjoyed and learned many for my future. I will try not to do these mistakes in the future. Thank you for interesting and useful information.))
ReplyDeleteHi Gulnora! I agree your opinion about Mistake#6.it is really interesting and helpful for being friendly. but on the other hand, it doesnt help to get marks according to students' knowlegde or participation, because We had like this probleme, but I dont want to tell. anyway teamwork is better than individualwork for improvimg our several skills as You mentioned.
DeleteOysha I agree with you. In this situation you shouldn't be upset, cause you are group mates and in teamwork you should help each other. However, we, IELTE are the family, so family always support in difficult time.
DeleteOysha teacher can know students knowledge by giving tests. Sorry for talking out of topic.
DeleteI also think that teamwork is better.
DeleteOysha, you said that teamwork is not so great, because it doesn't allow teachers to grade according to each one's knowledge and participation in group work activities. And you said it may lead to some disagreements of students who were active in preparation. That's why this article is suggesting to make students work in groups with individual accountability, which means every student in the group is important and responsible for the grades In this case active students let other passive groupmates think As a result, active and passive students work with no exception and no one is disappointed.
I agree with you. You are quite right. The most important thing in teamwork respect each other.
DeleteAdditionally, to all that suggestions I want to point out that calling students name is not so bad, as the author mentioned (#6). I can remember, that one psychologist advised me to call others with their names (not with their nick-names). For instance, my literature teacher called all of us with our names. Even while checking the attendance she used our names not surnames (last name). In the future, I would like to use this approach, because it makes students to feel responsibility, and also they will see individual close approach, I think.
ReplyDeleteFinally! this article helps to students to show or tell their own opinion about lectures, lessons, teacher. I think, this article is near the student's life, and there are various informations, suggestions to our future profession(teacher profession). But I didn't understand that this article hasn't been finished, so should we finish it as Anvarjon's. I guess no. Am I right?
ReplyDeleteI agree Anvarjon's and Bahor's opinions, becouse I think teacher can't see their mistakes, but students can, and Anvarjon gave some of them.
yes bahor i want to support your opinion:) some techers also calls each students by name. I feel that teacher remember my name and ask exactly me, I feel responsibility and etc.
ReplyDeleteOysha I agree with your opinion. Students always know their teachers` mistakes, but is is impossible to say teachers about it.I somatimes think that techers also realize their mistakes, but it is so hard to admit and correct them easily. Because even sometimes I hear or know my mistakes, it is quite difficult to admit. I try to deny it. I think teachers are also the people who make mistakes. There is aproverb:"Only God is without mistake". But, unfortunately, techers mistakes will be caused a lot unpleasent events or things, especially argument between teachers and students in a secret way.

ReplyDeleteWhile readning the particular article i was cought by title, and was enjoying my reading but, accidently was interupted with a thought where is the continuation??????? but still, i think its not bad article and diserves discussion. Especially among students who like finding mistakes of teachers ;) If to be serious, as most of students in the IELTE are planning to become teachers, they should or even obliged to read this article in order to become familiar with the 10 top mistakes of teachers and avoid doing them in the nearest future.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletePeople should be enough brave in order to agree with the statement that they make mistakes in the sphere where they are professionals. From this point of view, we could state that teaches do try to improve their ability of teaching in a good manner. However, as we know that only working people could make mistakes and accusing them for it is pointless and useless. Since, during our lifetime we make mistakes. Taking into consideration the fact that the rest five worst mistakes are not given in this particular article I will refer to the existing ones. I agree with this pointed mistakes to some extent. You could ask why to some extent, because I am not in charge to generalize the results of one research or understanding of one people for all available case in the world. Each small geographical area has its own values, customs, norms, moral to follow, the peculiarities of the culture which proves that if something is wrong in area it can be more than right in another. Moreover, I am going to judge each given statement from my point of view let’s start then.
ReplyDeleteMistake 10
Actually I cannot say that it is mistake. The fact that teacher asks first of all from volunteers can be sign of creating of friendly atmosphere during mostly tutorial or lectures, just to find out the average perception of current generation in face of young students. If students try to avoid to answer it is not the mistake of teacher or even students, I assume that there is no rule “safe to fail” or “free to fail” all students afraid of making any kind of mistakes in our society and they are judged and criticized by their contemporaries for such actions. Yes I agree that if teacher always employ this approach it will be considered as a mistake. Even among manager there are three styles of management 1)autocratic 2)democratic and 3)laissez-fair from them only the mixture can be the best one. It means that teachers should use this approach but blend it with our questioning approaches.
Mistake 9
ReplyDeleteIt can be considered an issue among students and it happens I consider that students should just approach to teacher and tell that they do not prefer this style of calling students. Imagine in reality the students are consumer and university and teacher is the organization which offers the service, if no one from consumer will not complain then the organization will consider this situation as preferable and will not try to change anything. If it happens then students are in charge to change the situation.
Mistake 8
There are some teachers possessing this problem. Sometimes teachers do not want to change the structure of lecture due to lack of time for preparation or losing interest in teaching some students who do not show any response for teachers trying to do their best. Thus teachers will do their job in easiest and most convenient way.
Hello everybodY)
ReplyDeleteI liked this article , but not so much as I expected ) maybe because i am not interested in this profession , and this topic isn`t so close to me.
Yea, most of these mistakes are really true .
But as for me , I like a group-work.
It is interesting , useful and also pull together groupmates.
First of all, i would like to say that we are not face with all these mistakes. Some of them really exist in some of our lessons and teachers don't always notice that there is something wrong.
ReplyDeletewhat about mistake #6, i agree that almost always one student doesn't participate in the group-work. it is, first, unfair if this person get the same mark; second, it is waste of time for this very student, because he doesn't learn new material.
oh, I don't know why, but I again begin to argue with u. The article generlyzing most common mistakes. So it does'nt mean that every teacher has these very mistakes.
Delete:)i meant that exactly in our country and our lessons we don't face with these problems. For example, we don't use powerpoint so much, that's why we haven't such problem
DeleteAh, yeah, I got u wrong
DeleteWhat I advice is TO GIVE this TOP TEN MISTAKES to 4YEAR STUDENTS as a HIPPOCRATIC OATH!!! So that they promise not to make them in advance.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I liked the article or let us say "Teachers' avoidbook".
But, our teachers' usage of above mentioned methods is a delicately separate theme...
ReplyDeleteI suppose people who copied and pasted the article looked through it and learnt something...
Awaiting for changes...
Strange article, isn’t it. It was said top ten list of mistakes, but there are only five. I really wanted to read continuation. To be frank, I cannot say that this article caught my attention so much, though I tried to read it carefully. While reading it, my mind wandered several times.
ReplyDeleteThe mistakes stated above are true indeed, and they can influence on students’ education more or less. Mistake #10 – When you ask a question, and call for volunteers, you usually see the same faces who response always. However, when you ask a question students by name, they might be shocked, or on the other hand, it makes students answer questions especially those that keep silent but knows the answer. Mistake #6 Furthermore, I don’t think that everyone likes group work although it is useful. Because some work hard on project while others don’t, but the good result can cover up everything, and it seems that everyone was good at group work and all of them did well. Mistake #8, Power Point shows are not always effective. As slideshow starts, everyone begins to relax, some students can be busy with other stuffs, some immediately take advantage of time and uses cellphone, since teacher has to stand aside in order make the show visible for everyone. However, slideshow is very interesting for some students.
AHAAA Daler!
DeleteYou are not sleeping ???
Maybe you weren't warned about we should write the continuation ourselves. If you notice there are some suggestions as an example. And about power points, i guess you don't really like them, but if it's interesting everyone will be involved in it and the classroom will keep silence.
DeleteOk, I can be understood, I am verrrry nervous and worried about the saturday party!!!(Maryam Ibragimovna)that is why I cannot sleep and composing silly comments(((((
ReplyDeleteVery interesting article. Reading this article, I found out the reasons of some boring classes, where 80 minutes seem to be become the whole everlastingness. It is really useful article for young teachers who haven't completely formed as confident ones. I liked the structure in this article, because after each mistake there is advice that allows you to avoid the mistake, and one troubled situation refers to another one. Everything is connected with each other.
ReplyDeleteYes, very good article. I haven't found any strange or irrational thing in it yet. Maybe this is because I haven't awoken the critical thinking part of my mind. Especially I liked how the authors kindly presented 5#mistakes with a good introducton to them. In the introduction they mentioned that those mistakes which they provided may be justified. It's good, because this shows that they are really good at their work and are aware of any advantages or disadvantages of various teaching systems comprehensively.
Deleteyes, you're quite right the ability to confess is one of the strongest adjectives person has.
DeleteOf all the three articles posted in this blog, this one has caught my attention most, since as my major is anyways oriented on language teaching, here I got information about the worst mistakes made during teaching. Avoiding them will surely help one to give successful lectures and raise one's students' knowledge and experience. The five mistakes given are really common in the practice of some teachers at present, however, I discovered them for myself only now, thanks to this report. I rarely used to think what was wrong about teaching in classes and at lectures, for I prefer gaining knowledge on my own, studying individually. But having read this report, I realized the reason why I always choose studying by myself, that is because some classes are like the kingdom of boredom and melancholy, partly due to these mistakes, I think.
ReplyDeleteThe detail explanations and example suggestions, proposed to correct these drawbacks, thoroughly refer to the problems and advise some wise steps to eliminate the mistakes in teaching. In particular, I appreciate the author's advice not to call for volunteers and not to call on students cold. The ways students behave after being called for volunteers remind me on how I myself act, when in that situation. To be honest, I also do not want sometimes to bother myself thinking, once there is a probability of someone else's participating in the class discussion after such a request of a teacher's.
In general, I beleive that a huge positive shift in teaching may occur if the ideas in this report are implemented in practice. Once a teacher acknowledges that some of his/her habits should be changed, the students' attitudes to lectures may also become better.
I agree with my friend Babur's opinion. I liked the most this article. As I study in the university of oriental languages and as my future profession connected with teaching, I want to say that It is very difficult to be a very good teacher. Seldom one will have problems on teaching and it will be not because of the lack of knowledge, but the lack of experience. Firstly, a good teacher should always find a common language with students. Secondly, he should identify their interests and then choose the best methods of teaching for them. As to the author's methods ( I respect him!! ) they are really great! One should read and take advantages from it. There are too much detailed examples and explanations which I liked most. From the point of view I want to say that even we can make a book from this article and give it to every 4th year studnets.. Respect IELTE!
ReplyDeleteYes you are right, Akmal, about giving the book to every 4th year students.May be we can tell them to enter and read this article. Now It's more useful for them than us because they are postgraduaters. On the other hand, we also really need these information in order not to make these kind of mistakes in the future.
DeleteAkmal and Oysha I agree with you, but I think they(I mean 4th year students)are already familiar with such kind of instructions. They have been studying here for 4 years))))
DeleteI really want to study rest of five mistakes. Because I would like to be teacher, and I don`t want to such mistakes. While reading the this article, I made sure that all the mistakes are correct, and made by teachers, sometimes willingly sometimes unwillingly. In the future, I really would like to avoid them. It will be exellent if I have chance of reading other mistakes also. I guess, they are more interesting and mostly made mistakes. I`m waiting for Ms.Sevara tells us or enter these information into blog.
ReplyDeleteYet, somehow intriguing article which shows mistakes of teacher’s without any beautiful description, so it held my attention till the end. Considerable part of which tries to explain that problem is not in mistakes but in accepting that mistake and work it out. Good teaching is combining everything, beginning with Power Point Presentation and ending with group work. So with it you capture class more easily then just a simple teaching.

ReplyDelete"Everyday we should go on updating and improving ourselves". Crem of the cake.
ReplyDeleteWhy I liked the article? Maybe, it is about my interests. Because, today what interests me is educational and practical knowledge of different spheres. For, I am in three dimensional need of information and it attracts me.
Coming to the point that I agree with half of the commentators, we are different, but, unlike it, we are all in one direction. Teaching and preparing lesson plans are totally different things. That is why, when teachers cannot diffrentiate them, such mistakes appear.
That is very essential for me personally that there are people who can indicate such mistakes and we can avoid them, consequently.
I liked the article. From my point of view the article is very interesting and useful both for students and for teachers. It enables to students to share with the mistakes which they realized during their whole academic performance(I think students know teachers' mistakes not reading this article, after reading it they just prove that these mistakes really exsist and provide with additional mistakes), while it gives opportunity for teachers to know their mistakes and correct them afterwards. The language of the article is smooth. The organization is also easy to follow. First, a mistake itself, then the consequences of that mistake and after it suggestion to get out of that mistake. Really, above mentioned mistakes(first, it is stated that there a list of 10 mistakes, but actually there are 5)cause lectures(or classes)to be boring and ineffective for students.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am going to add some mistakes that I've faced so far.First mistake which I am going to say is teachers' permanence. Some techers have their teaching methods and they are used to use them before all types of students. However, one teching method can't be suitable for any class. One method may be suitable for one class, for two classes, for ten classes but it mayn't be suitable for eleventh class. At that time teachers begin to complain that this class isn't so "normal". Indeed, there is a way/method to teach for any type of students. And the only thing that's required from teachers is that, they should be consistent and adapt their manners according to the type of students'.
Next mistake that I want to add is that, some teachers tend to support the students who have a good relationship(this relationship can be connected with finance)with them.
Of course, it's difficult for everyone to go against someone who has a good relationship with you, who says sweet words to you, but teachers should be objective in any case.
Lily good ideas ), especially i acknowledge your opinion that teachers should treat students no paying attention to their knowledge, abilities ang financial status.
DeleteI think everyone liked this article.but why there is still 67 comments?Because among 3 articles this one is the best for me.Theme is close to us,connected with our future profession. It will be great if you write more comments
ReplyDeleteYeah, I guess so, most students liked it including you and me also, but don't forget that not all students of IELTE want to be teacher after graduating. Maybe that's why the least comment on this topic. Don't worry we are here to full it ;-)
DeleteThank you for supporting!!!
DeleteEveryone liked this article, this is true. And there are fairly few articles because it doesn't have any mistake that could make students oppose at once. If this article were full of mistakes, only then there would be a huge number of mistakes. Because as you know, negative things are talked more than positive ones.
DeleteThat comment above was addressed to Saltanat
DeleteThis article gives us exact tips what we should avoid when we start working in this profession. As a student, I agree with author. It's very difficult to be a teacher because their minor blunders can take away student's attention and be the reason of student's bad performance on the lessons. The mistakes listed above aren't general, as every student is different: someone likes groupworks, someone doesn't. To my mind, the best method is to observe some time the students' behaviors and to create different activities according to their level and interest. It will take more time to create different assignments, but in my opinion in the end these efforts make all students more zealous and interested in the subject.
ReplyDeleteWELL, I LIKED IT, BUT WHERE ARE THE REST OF MISTAKES? ANYWAY, I GUESS, IN IELTE WE COLLIDEDE WITH PROBLEMS LIKE THESE AND THE SUGGESTIONS OF SOLVING MISTAKES MUST BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. SOME OF OUR TEACHERS ARE ALWAYS MAKING THESE SORT OF MISTAKES EVERYTIME THEY TEACH US. IT IS HIGH TIME FOR US TO CHANGE THE SITUATION WHICH WE ARE IN.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, you've forgotten that Ms.Sevara said that it's up to us, we should find and point out teachers' other 5 mistakes. There were some suggestions by students which I partly agree with, for example, Anvar's(from 1D) suggestion, maybe you'll add some ideas.
DeleteSo then, maybe you would gladly start sharing, if you have any, of course.
Delete(DREAMER)
in fact i really liked the article suggested in that blog but there are points hard for me to agree with. the part that indicates teacher's mistake about power point is quite arguable. to my mind power point presentations make the class much more challenging and interesting both for the student and teacher. furthermore, slides turn the data into visual element that are quite easy to acquire.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your opinion Vazira, you're totally right about visual aids, because as far as I know most students are visual learners, but it would be perfect if they also distribute some important information on the paper(when we don't have lack of paper).
DeleteVazira, you are right when you said slides turn the data into visual element so that they are easy to remember. But, when I have lessons conducted with the help of Power Point, I feel as if I didn't get anything from that class. Because in the PP there will be lots of information concerning to the lesson's topic, and that's why I cannot always keep up with them. As a result, I lose point and just sit applauding with my ears about what the teacher is speaking. Slides with full of information on the topic that you are not yet introduced are not effective for learning something new from.
DeleteI'm not going to gainsay against others, but I want to say that there are norms of teachers teaching methods. For example, they know what to do and how to teach students in class, because their profession is pedagogue.
ReplyDeleteSome students commented that groupwork is not efficient way of teaching but it cannot be always true. We know that we sometimes need groupwork in order to reinforce our skills on subjects with our groupmates.
Now i am going to give other 5 possible teachers' mistakes.
ReplyDelete5.not paying attention to every student or just discriminate them according to their knowledge or position in the classes.
4.weak preparing to lessons,as aresult losing consentration.
3.unability to control students and classroom.
2.failure of drawing attention.
1.overuse of activities or lectures at the same time.
I agree with some points of yours, except 5th one, because i've never face with this kind of situation. Maybe you had or maybe you felt like it, but I'm pretty sure that we don't face with this problem in IELTE, don't you think?
DeleteMoreover, I want to add that I guess your 2nd and 3rd problems are seems to be the same, if teachers can't draw students attention, as a result, they'll not be able to control students and classroom.
That's that I think, in general, I like your suggestion.
I did not say about IELTE. I meant general.About 2nd and 3rd mistakes they can fullfil each other.
DeleteHi Guzal. you know, I think Salatanat spoke in general about teachers' mistakes. May be IELTE eachers may make these kind of errors.they are also human. every person may make it. On the other hand, IELTE teachers are professional. That's why, doing them might be 5 or 10 percent in IELTE.
DeleteAs we are future teachers( I don't know how many of us will be teacher ) this article is very helpful to know what kind of mistakes do the teachers. There is no one who is perfect, everyone has its own faults, but if teacher keeps on doing mistakes they affect badly to the future of student or pupil. Mistake #9 for me is totally best way of teaching, when I studied at school, our school was specialised Math and Physics, our Math teacher used this strategy a lot, that every pupil in the class was ready for answering to any question, however, if we compare it to higher education system it's also the good way of increasing student's fast answering and decision making.
ReplyDeleteGreat article! Awesome.I thought that all writers write their articles only about students mistakes. At last we have an article about teachers mistakes also:)It is just a joke
ReplyDeleteYes, not all teachers are perfect(students also)I think that after reading this article every future teacher will pay attenion to teaching methods, behaviour and etc. I mostly like power point mistake, because it is really very boring just look at slides and try to catch the meaning of not always undestandable pictures. Also,I have read about teacher's questions with a great pleasure.Fortunately,I think that we have not any teacers with such problems.
Yes, I also think there is not any teacher in IELTE who makes this kind of small, but very important and worth-to-know mistakes. Doesn't it seem that all the IELTE teachers read this article a long time ago and already learned those presented mistakes by heart? Because thinking carefully, I found that no IELTE teachers make this kind of mistakes.
DeleteAll people do mistake in their life, even teachers. They do some mistakes as you mentioned in your article. You counted and explained us teaching mistakes. And each one is suitable for your text. You chose good topic that is interesting for everybody especially for teachers and students. As so it will be useful for some teachers who do such kind of mistakes. You can add some mistakes . For example, some teachers are very strict for putting marks. It is not good, because students who suffer that teachers' mistake feel themselves disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI am not completely agree with you, Ulbosin. Just be ready for lesson and nobody will put you bad mark!)))) Teachers should be strict, but of course with measure.
DeleteYou made a professional butter-up to author(even if he ignores)and childish complaint. Sorry for true comment. I could cheat you by having said you are right, otherwise, I would look like you!
DeleteHa, so actual article! As we all are going to be teachers, excellent ones even, we should also analyze these mistakes. And, one question which bothers me- where’re others 5 mistakes?? Whether we should add them ourselves? I would add, but I afraid of consequences))) Joke! But now seriously. Group works… It sometimes irritates me, especially when one or two people doing something, while others do everything except the task- using phones, yawning and dreaming. I think, such kind of work is not effective. What about another mistakes, in IELTE they don’t work…may be. But there’s one thing, I don’t know if it is mistake or not , but anyway I think it’s wrong. I don’t like when teachers are late. If teacher requires be on time in class, he also should be on time. It’s punctuality, it characterizes the person.
ReplyDeleteThe article about “The Ten Worst Teaching Mistakes” not only gives us absolutely clear opinion about the mistakes college teachers may make, but moreover, it suggests us avoiding making a habit of any of them. As according to the meaning of the 10th mistake I got that it is better to handle questioning rather than calling for volunteers due to the fact that they may avoid eye contact. The 9th mistake certainly believes that it is better to avoid so-called – “cold-calling”, whereas the 8th mistake tells some advices about PowerPoint Slides. The 7th mistake gives information about providing variety in instructions, as I understood by the content – mixed things like board work, multimedia, storytelling, discussion, activities, individual assignments, etc can help the classes to be effective. And finally, the 6th mistake provides us with the following advice – using references on cooperative learning, which includes individual exams covering the full range of, knowledge and skills can be really helpful.
ReplyDeletePulat Alimov 1-"A"
ReplyDeleteguys i don't know why they called it " the ten worst mistakes" if there are only five. however, i could get something worth, as a future tutor.nowadays some methods are getting old, and instead a new ones came. so it would be cool if some of teachers adopt to modern methods. sometimes they don't let student speak freely. if that student finds a mistake of teacher by chance and tries to correct him/her, teacher immediately gets angry and becomes against. Please dear teachers calm down, don't lose your authority by acting like that.(it ain't only about IELTE teachers)
you are right Pulat!!! but teacher cant make mistakes. teachers should be ready for any question which give students. i like very strickt teachers. they can make me study!!!!!! my opinion about topic is good. but where are the rest five mistakes?
ReplyDeleteEspecially this article interested people by searching the other 5 mistakes!! The majority of readers asked themselves:"Why the writer wrote only 5 of them" I dont know why but such kind of thoughts really disturb our concentration and we are not focused on the article itself. The idea to speak about teachers` mistakes awake us but not all of us can tell their real opinion about those mistakes. That`s why this article i liked more than others. It is very interesting. it holds readers by not giving the end and lets us to guess...
ReplyDeletePulat Alimov 1 "A"
ReplyDeleteTanya maybe you are somehow right about guessing but if we have to guess the others, there will be countless. that's why there should be needed precise passages in order to get the best mistakes among others.
you have your own opinuon as me.but anyway thanks for comment
DeleteGood article!!! I strongly agree with the author’s opinion. The article was provided with good explanation and examples. The article attracted my attention at once. In the title was written the 10 worst teaching mistakes but the author wrote about only 6 mistakes. I agree with the mistake #6. The group work is good for lazy students. As saltanat said that in group work only skilled students work and others just agree with their opinion. Individual works is good to improving student’s knowledge. Now I would like to improve my opinion about teachers. Teachers should have a good teaching method. In my point of view teachers can arouse students’ interest in their lesson. They must be creative and each lesson they should give at list one interesting activity. Because activities make lessons interesting and I think most students like making activities. Besides that they should know how to encourage students. In this way students interest in that teachers' lesson and try to study well even that subject is boring for them. In my opinion the first main thing is teachers’ honesty especially on grading. The students who study well can get low mark than other students or teachers can put the same mark for lazy students and clever students. Caused by it the students may think that anyway their teacher grade them same and they do not study any more. Consequently clever students will be lazy as other students.
ReplyDeleteAs we are students, we clearly know that how teaching process is difficult. Moreover, we know it’s unavoidable from making mistakes in this profession. Despite this, teachers and professors improve their teaching approaches day by day. It’s very difficult to know in advance whether your teaching method fruitful or not. Time and experience show everything as well as results of your approach. In this article, some of the teaching blunders are explained in order not to redo by other teachers and prospective teachers. It is good and great help for teaching staff. The article is well detailed with facts as long as examples. The structure of sentences is well organized and easily understandable.
ReplyDeleteMostly the mistake #9 greatly stole my attention because I have come across this kind of situations many times during my study years. When I studied at my lyceum I had a strict history teacher. He also made the mistake #9 very often during his lesson. As a result, the students were afraid of him very much. The students had to study under the pressure. For this reason, they loathed the history subject. In my opinion, my teacher used inappropriate teaching methods.
All in all, I would suggest that this kind of articles and suitable teaching methods should be informed to secondary schools’ teachers also.
An exceptional article..
ReplyDeleteHowever I do not think those mistakes are really the worst. 'Cause besides study problems, we face personal problems with teachers. And they are much more serious.
Maybe they are given in the continuation of the article, which I would read with great interest and pleasure!..
Before reading this list I did not even know that some methods of teaching are officially mistakes. Let me start from the beginning.
ReplyDelete10. Yes, I think, to question and seek a volunteer is not correct. Some students will begin to relax, knowing that they just do not want to be volunteers. And again, the same people will raise their hands. And the other students in their background will look stupid and lazy. But this is not the worst.
9. As for the 9th line, as a student I can say that this is a mistake, indeed. The sudden appeal to the student is always scary and annoying. The author very correctly described the situation that the other students at the same time just relax. But for the next lecture the students will come to fear. For the student it is very important to have time to think about the answer to the question, in order to not look awkward in front of classmates.
8. As for the Power Point Presentation, not all students like this method of teaching. This is not always seen and heard, and it is not convenient to take notes during a lesson. Not an effective method.
7. On the seventh place, I can say that this is also a mistake. The student will be much more interested to learn, while in the audience s/he knows that something new is waiting for him/her.
6. This teaching method has its disadvantages, which lies in the fact that the teacher did not know which of its students was capable of individually working.
I wonder what mistakes have taken place as the first 5 mistakes in this list...
Hi my dear friend Nargiz! I really agree to your lists(opinions), because you explained your thoughts one by one.
DeleteThis article catches my attention because in a future want to be a teacher and I have to know what kind mistakes I should avoid. In addition to mistake 8 I want to say that spend all time using power point presentation is boring and useless. Not only PPP can be used during the lesson but also activities can make it interesting. In fact all mistakes can be corrected just we should know how to do it. To sum up teachers respond is not only come to lesson, give information and ask but also catch attention of the student, to convey the topic .Personally I believe that in future these mistakes will disappear.
ReplyDeleteI’m not agreeing with all statements that author gave us. For example 9th mistake “call on cold” is somewhat useful and works sometimes. Because it may warn student to pay attention to the class, consequently for the next time student will participate in the class in order not to be ashamed. Also about 8th mistake I’m not so sure that P.P. shows are not effective. It contradicts to the 7th mistake.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with 6th mistake. Mostly on teamwork some students couldn’t find opportunity to show their knowledge or it’s useful for lazy students who used rely on others knowledge, do nothing and at the end of the class get the same points with other students ( as Saltanat mentioned)
I read the article and all comments. I am ready to agree with many points that have been listed. I think the most important in the process of teaching is that students in the first place, should be interested in learning. second in importance-is setting and learning. I believe that in the first place is interest of the student to learn. and the second-place how well the student mastered the material. and all this to 50 percent depends on the teacher and from his teaching methods. It is very important that teachers know their mistakes and correct them in time. I would also like to note ninth mistake, I think it should come first. Because I feel some discomfort when someone suddenly utters my name. All my thoughts are mixed and I start to worry.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the culture of East teachers are the most respectful people. When we were children we used to think that teachers usually don't make any mistakes,on the contrary, they teach people how to avoid making mistakes. so the article was surprising for me. On the other hand nobody is perfect; and teachers also may make mistakes. However, if a teacher makes mistake, he\she should recognize own faults and correct them. As we are also teachers in future the article is helpful to avoid these mistakes. My opinions about mistakes:when the teacher gave the question some of the students even did not think about answering. As they knew the answer which they told anyway would not be liked b teacher. they knew the correct answer would be the opinion of teacher's favourite student. 9th mistake is similar with 10th. When the student was waiting the correct answer from his groupmate he would be bothered by suddenly hearing his name. In fact he couldn't concentrate on answer. He just kept silence.
ReplyDeleteAbout 8 th mistake:although we had few classes based on PowerPoint. I liked all of them. Even lectures on linguistics was easy to understand by slide show. Maybe they were interesting for us because of being explained after every slide by our teachers.
Students sometimes have some boring classes. in boring classes the sane method of teaching will be continued till the end of the semestr:teacher checks homework, then axplains the new theme (sometimes does not explain only make students read);then he\she tries to do some activities(role plays, make up funny stories)which make the class a little bit interesting.
i really agree with the list of teacher's mistakes in teaching given in this article, however i do not consider them as the most ones.anyway article is very good. it teaches teachers not to do some mistakes during classes and while teaching.and i want to list another mistakes as we are supposed to write them. #5 to love smarter students more than others and to pay attention them more.it makes others do not want to study.#4 to show students his/her bad mood, emotions, let them now about his/her life problems. it influences students mood and study.#3 do not punish students for not studying and not doing homeworks. it makes them relax and do not study neither in school nor at home. #2 do not come to classes on time, let students go home earlier very often.#1 to become so close with students that they consider him/her as a friend. that makes students believe that teacher do not punish them for not studying. teachers somewhat should keep distance with students.

ReplyDeleteAb. Iroda
I liked this article. Because there is written about some unvisible but very important mistakes which are done by teachers.
In mistake 10, there is written very rapidly action. For example: If a teacher asks a question and demands for the answer from a teacher , a student feels anxiety and forgets the answer. As a result that students mark laws down.
In mistake 7, there is written about a team work which is very effective for students but at the same time it is not very interesting. Because it does not contain any visual aids such kind of graphs, charts, diagrams and so on. Without them the lecture will be boring.
According to mistake 6, I think the group work is not so effective. Because in group some people learn very easily, but other students learn very slowly. That`s why those students can not give their ideas among the group. And that students can not be marked.
After reading this article, I can say that it is right.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I haven’t seen this kind of teachers in places I studied and I’m studying, given mistakes are often made by teachers.
For instance, (#9) asking suddenly can make students shocked when it’s first time of the class. Even after being acquainted with all students, teacher should make an atmosphere where students feel free to say their opinions. And then after adapting to each other, teacher can ask any question.
(#8)- if I speak about “droning slides” I would suggest teachers not to be addicted to show PPP (Power Point Presentation). Because if teacher wants to make lessons interesting, she can do it without PPP too.
(#7)- non-stop lecturing creates very boring atmosphere in class and students stop understanding, sometimes even listening to the lecturer. Lecturing should be held with breaks, such as discussion after telling major information. In this ay lectures can be interesting.
(#6) I can give various opinions about this. Because this can be both mistake and success at the same time. In IELTE, when we are in groups it’s interesting and everyone tries to do the same amount of research or work with others. It makes us close friends and increases ability of adaptability. Because we rely on our group mates, it gives responsibility to do job better.
But in many other schools it is different and it can be mistake of teachers!
3. I think this article is very close to us as we are future teachers. I have faced immediately calling students, cold-callings which made me embarrassed. Even if I had known the true answer I couldn’t answer to the cold- callings. If someone is suddenly paid a great deal of attention, this one cannot concentrate at this moment. Using power point presentation makes lessons interesting but overusing them cuts interactive activities. Wrong instructions confuse the students and will absolutely decrease their points. As a student I dare to say it makes students disagree with teachers. And making students work in groups is not useful in every home task as article says.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, I noticed that this error that we can meet every day. I agree that some of these items are indeed errors. Even I had such kind of situation as in 10th mistake. For example when teacher asks question and says any volunteers I usually I also lose my eye contact and think that others will give answer. In 9th mistake as for me this situation is not mistake. Because, when teacher calls on someone's cold s/he tries to catch attention. I do agree that statement in 8th mistake is true, because when teacher passes pages quickly on power point student can’t catch information. And I can say teachers held uncompleted classes with using this kind of method. The worst mistake is 7th mistake. If teacher gives wrong instruction, students also will do the task in wrong way. Consequently, it brings to spoil everything and do it again. I don’t agree with 6th mistake. As for me its more comfortable to work in groups. Because, I feel myself confident.

In order not to make such kind of mistakes teachers should be a psychiatrist. Because every student has their own characters that can not be seen to others.their mind is also different. That`s why teachers should look them as individuals not as group. Thus it is clear that, four children in a family have four kind of characters.
I liked this article but does a writer follow all the rules himself as mentioned above. because all mistakes (if they are really mistakes) are the main methods of teaching indeed. Pay attention there are only four (10-6) mistakes and I confused about how to teach my students in the future because nowadays we are studying with these methods in most fields. Can you imagine what will be the first mistake if we follow through the article? In my imagination it will be like that: "Teaching students is useless, let them learn every thing temselves and you had better not to be teacher! Be a businessman. It's good job!!! I think it's related to writers country. web know USA is a big country and There are a lot of people who has own opinion about everything. And every person can say own opinion on this problem. Richard M. Felder is one of them. We will see in the future wether that article is true or not.
ReplyDeleteYeah maybe you are right, but on the other hand, you know in our country also these kind of errors exist.tha's why, I think, our teacher put this article. For instance: POwer POint shows, working in a group or individual and so on.
DeleteIn these errors, specifically in this article, I see our lessons in IELTE. It may be taken separately they may be errors, but if you use all the same lesson in the right place and in proper order, classes will not be boring, but rather will be interesting and effective.
ReplyDeleteEverybody makes mistakes, especially in a profession as challenging and complex as teaching. Yes, actually in general teachers also make mistakes during the lessons, lectures, and classes. I think it make worse the quality of teaching. In my point of view, teachers make mistake when they are don't have enough experience, they don't want to work with students or they work for a money. In my opinion a good teachers, they are high-educated, teachers always will be respected by the students, and don't do any mistakes. Our teachers are-our second parents! In our IELTE all teachers are the best!!! I'm very happy that i'm studying here! :)
ReplyDeleteGood article! I liked author's opinion. besides that article full of meaningful words. But there are some statements that i cannot agree. I think that PPP is a good way of explaining the topic, because it's easier for visual learners to memorize all the important points. With the other mistakes I agree absolutely. Also I'm very interested in the continuation of the article!
ReplyDeleteThe title of article sounds sensationally, but the mistakes written above are not so important that can make readers to feel really agreement for 99%. It would be great if the author mentioned the rudest mistakes of teachers and their methods of teaching!!!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the author about this article. We often meet such problems and mistakes during lessons. Besides, most of us future teachers and it is useful for us to know this information in order to be good and professional teachers.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the worst mistake of teachinf method is using Power Point show. It is uneffective method of teaching. The information should be explained carefully rather than showed in slides. Yes, they can make slide shows with diagrams, photos, etc., but they also must explain learning material carefully and give handouts in order students to learn it at home. However, if we receive handouts, we don't need slides anymore. Photos are also can be printed out. That's why I think slide shows are uneffective method of teching students.
First of all as nobody is similar students also are various. All of them cannot be well educated in one method of teaching. I agree with the article that teacher must not pay attention only for those students who know the subject well, but also there are some students who is lack of knowledge. They need more attention from their teachers. Actually teachers must be well educated and always in a movement to find more better methods of teaching. Additionally, they must feel them as a students and be friendly with their pupils also. Unfortunately, there are some teachers who are irresponsible and unskilled. The government must control teachers’ knowledge and their way of teaching…
ReplyDeletegood article. Here I could find my inside words which I couldn't tell for a long time. The mistakes which are given in the article really need to solve.
ReplyDelete
